Mercury Dime or Winged Liberty Head With Rim No Letters
The fine and delicate ancient art of coin piercing was originated in the 16th century by noblemen
for their true loves. This charming jewelry crafted from authentic coins makes a truly exquisite
custom-made gift for him or her!
Although this coin is typically referred to as the Mercury dime, the principal device is in reality a
representation of Liberty. The wings crowning her cap are intended to symbolize liberty of believed.
The artist initial's AW is just to the right side of the neck.
The Mercury dime is a ten-cent coin strucken by the U.S. Mint from 1916 to 1945. Engineered by
Adolph Weinman and also known as the Winged Liberty Head dime, it acquired its widely used name as the
obverse image associated with a young Liberty, recogniziable by her winged Phrygian cap and had been
confused with the Roman god Mercury. Weinman is thought to have employed Elsie Stevens, the wife of
lawyer and poet Wallace Stevens, that served as the model. The reverse of the coin represents a fasces,
symbolizing unity and strength, and an olive branch, signifying peace.
In the year 1916, the dime, quarter, and half dollar designed by Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber
had been in production for 25 years, and could possibly be replaced by the Treasury, of which the Mint
serves as a part, without the need of Congressional authorization. Mint officials appeared to be under
the misapprehension that all the designs needed changing, and carried out a competition between three
(3) sculptors, through which Barber, who was found to be in his position for 36 years, also took part.
Weinman's designs in favor of the dime and half dollar had been selected.
Despite the fact the new coin's design was shown admiration for its beauty, vending machine
manufacturers were having difficulties making the new dime work in their devices. The Mint implemented
modifications upon learning of the issues. The coin continued being minted until 1945, at which point
the Treasury ordered that a replacement design, presenting recently deceased president Franklin
Roosevelt, take its place.
