    Description

William S. Haynes 1904 Professional Wood Flute for Restoration. Rare!.
For sale is this awesome antique Haynes flute! I’m a professional musician and teacher, but my knowledge of antique flutes is limited. Please ask specific questions.
I picked this up on our local Facebook marketplace a few years ago (lol). I wanted to have it restored…but it’s just been sitting in my office collecting dust. Please help me downsize.
The flute is closed hole (plateau), modern Boehm keywork, c foot. Offset G. The keywork is silver. The serial number is 835 - according to the Haynes registry the instrument this “L.P. Closed Hole Flute” was completed on Oct. 4th 1904.
The flute will need a complete restoration from a reputable flute specialist to be usable. Currently, it does not play.
The keywork is complete and seems to function well. The Ab key seems like it may have been repaired or replaced at some point in the past, I’m not sure - I have tried to show this in the photos. The rest of the keywork looks original and intact.
The wood foot and body are in excellent condition. I don’t see any evidence of cracks or repairs to the wood. The Haynes stamps are a bit faded, but can be made out on both joints - see photos. The body and foot of the flute are overall in great shape and are excellent candidates for restoration.
The headjoint - I think this is the original head, but I’m not sure. It is stamped “Christiansen, Schwelm, Boston Mass” in 3 lines, in the same shape as the traditional Haynes logo. I am not familiar enough with the Haynes company history to know if this is original or not. However, it fits the flute well. The head joint is severely cracked and will need extensive repair, possibly a sleeve. There are 3 cracks total: one long crack running about 2/3 the length of the head, one (previously repaired?) crack running about 3/4” from the bottom, and another 1.5” crack running from the bottom that branches. These second two smaller cracks run primarily over the silver tenon socket sleeve. These could all be restored and hidden by a very good tech/restoration expert, but it will be a job for someone very skilled.
The case is extremely worn and damaged, and no-longer latches. It works to hold the flute, but should probably be replaced after the instrument has been restored. I have out it in a brand new nylon+fleece case cover to keep it safe and insulated.
Overall, the instrument is in solid, restorable condition. This is an extremely rare, professional flute that is ready to be restored! With some time, skill, and love, this will be a beautiful instrument for a pro player once again.
Make me an offer! Get this out of my office!
This flute is being sold as-is, as found. Please ask all questions prior to purchase. The flute will be shipped via FedEx ground. Shipping inside US only. Thanks!
