Petrified wood is a fossil formed when a tree or tree-like plant is buried in an environment that is free of oxygen which prevents decay. Water flowing through the environment and tissues of the buried tree or plant slowly deposits minerals, replacing the cells and tissues with stone. Silica, calcite, pyrite, agate and even opal can be part of the stone left behind. Details of the bark, wood, and even cellular structure are often preserved. A piece of petrified wood may retain such detail of the original structure that it is difficult to differentiate it from modern wood without touching it.
