Andrew Begay is a master flute maker, wood sculptor andshaman. His work is steeped in the traditions of his people, the Dine’ NativeAmerican Indians. Andrew first began selling his work in Trading Posts on theborders of the Navajo Nation when he came down from the mountains. Now hispowerfully spirited flutes and sharp, dynamic sculptures are treasured byplayers and collectors around the world.
Andrew is of the Mud Clan, born for Red Streaking into WaterPeople. Andrew grew up in Red Mesa, in the Navajo Nation, and was raised in atraditional Dine’ family. Andrew’s father is a shaman and very well respectedelder of his people.
Andrew’s grandfather introduced Andrew to the flute when hewas 5 years old. Grandfather drew its name in the desert sand before him.Andrew read the word, the wind already erasing the markings. Grandfather said:“I imagine you can make this, and learn to play one, too”.
This was the beginning of Andrew’s life journey, a journeywhose purpose is to discover and share with the world the beauty of a voicethat resonates from the depths of his ancient, almost lost, culture.
Andrew understood his elders’ stories as living prayers,urging him to go forward and to learn about himself and his Dine’ culture. Hewas to use the life of the flute as his guide and the sweat lodge as a way tomove with spirit in prayer and healing. Andrew’s work is infused with spiritand you will love him as your brother.
Andrew creates flutes from the stories living inside wood.They make audible the living history of a People. Andrew’s flutes are bored andcarved using traditional processes and modern interpretations, from a varietyof woods and burls. Many are wood-burned with traditional Dine’ patterns, andinlaid with turquoise, pipestone, jet, coral, and mother of pearl. All areuniquely made, tuned to each flute's voice.
Andrew sees his work in wood, music, storytelling and sweatlodges as part of the same continuum and seeks to humbly serve the purposegiven to him, to walk in beauty.
This is a very rare opportunity to experience the richnessof the Native American culture directly, with a man who, while steeped intradition, has a modern experience of life, and the challenges inherent inbeing true to one’s work. Perhaps this is Andrew’s greatest gift: simply bybeing himself, he brings the power, value and humour of his ancient, andwonderfully human, culture into full, electrifying, contact with ours.
