The Chromatic Low Whistle Head Joint
This low whistle head joint is handcrafted by Nick Metcalf in NY USA. Nick has been making whistles and flutes since 1998.
The low whistle head joint was developed for two main reasons, the first was to give low whistle players a chromatic instrument that can play all the sharps and flats yet still plays like a low whistle. The second was to give flute players an alternative sound and also other wind and reed players and instrument that can be played vertically like a soprano sax yet still sound like a low whistle/flute. The development of the instrument took many years to perfect as there are some tuning issues if you just stick a whistle mouthpiece onto a flute body as the boehm system only works with the bell curved blow hole on the standard headjoint and if you just put a whistle mouthpiece, the octaves will not be in tune with each other. I spent many hours studying and experimenting until I finally found the magical formula to make the intonation between octaves just perfect. Now my headjoints are extremely popular, and I can’t keep them in stock.
I normally sell the headjoints with a student model inexpensive flute and that way I can make sure the tuning slide fits and it plays in tune. If you prefer to have it paired with a different flute, that’s fine, but I would need to have the flute in hand to make sure the tuning slide works as millimeters mean the difference between not fitting the flute body, and being too loose and falling out.

Please note that I developed this instrument myself and have been perfecting it for many years. There are a few other makers out there who are making them now.. so far I have not found any that have great intonation like mine does, except for one other maker who is asking 00 for his headjoint. So I believe my price range is very fair and you will get an excellent playing instrument.
