Description

Antique European Silverplate and Wood Hand Engraved Wine Caddy Greyhound Crest
Presented is a fine quality antique silver plated wine or champagne bottle caddy (coaster) with a turned wood base likely made in England in the mid 1800's.  As you can see, the sides are formed by rows of joined silver oval and round loops with beaded rims, standing a wide, stepped base. A central cartouche features the crest of a hand-engraved greyhound or whippet dog's head. The underside of the base is felt-lined.
There are no hallmarks on the piece. There does appear to be an indistinct incised mark on the inside of the upper rim which may be the remnant of a maker's mark that has been polished away at some point in this antique's long life.
The wine caddy is in very good condition. The exterior shows almost no wear to the plating, with some surface scratches visible on the cartouche. The wood inside the caddy shows surface wear. If you scrutinize the top of the silver rim, you will see where the silver has been polished down to where three-quarters of an inch of the top seam is visible. Inside the caddy, down low near the base you will notice some dark patches, but of course when in use holding a bottle, this will not be visible. There are otherwise no damages or repairs.
Dimensions: 3 5/8 inches diameter by 4 inches high. Interior diameter is 3.4 inches (just over 3 3/8 inches).
Weight: 10 oz (284.9 grams)
