with Hinged Handle
This is a fabulous 130+ year-old A. G. Dufva basket with and embossed ivy design. I polished the silver, but there is still some tarnish in the crevices and on the handle.
The pedestal on the basket is marked "A. G. Dufva NS  E." Axel Gabriel Dufva is one of the oldest silverplate factories in Europe. It was opened in 1847. Axel Gabriel Dufva (1822-1897) founded one of the first silverplate factories in Sweden, located in Stockholm. He also devised a dating system for the year of production. He took 24 letters from the Latin alphabet and assigned them to every year starting with 1882.
This basket is stamped with "A. G. Dufva NS  E." The A. G. Dufva stands for Axel Gabriel Dufva, the company name; NS stands for nickle silver; and E is the production year - 1886.
The basket is 4" high with the handle down. The bowl of the basket has an 11" diameter. The middle of the bowl is engraved with the initials "M H."
